An Introduction to Malpractice Insurance

As its name suggests, malpractice insurance is purchased to protect doctors, nurses, hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities from malpractice lawsuits. Physician malpractice insurance is important to have because it protects you against patients who may try to sue, even over an incident that may not be the fault of the doctor. Such a lawsuit can be expensive and ruin a doctor's reputation. There are professional companies that specialize in providing medical malpractice insurance. After so many years of education and training, you don't want your medical career to go down the drain because of a malpractice suit. Litigation by patients is more common than you might think, especially if a patient believes they will benefit financially.

Malpractice insurance is something you must have if you are practicing as a doctor or running a hospital because the cost of the insurance can be far less than the cost of a big lawsuit. It is unfortunate but a fact that not all lawsuits are valid, but end up costing the doctor or hospital lots of money regardless. You can buy medical malpractice liability insurance and other types of physician insurance through a variety of professional medical insurance companies. Before you open for business, make sure you buy malpractice insurance for not only your best interests but those of the patients you are helping.
